Raphus Cucullatus, also called the Dodo bird is an extinct bird who lived in the forest on Mauritius in the 17th century. The Dodo was a big flightless bird with a very big beak and a big body. It's about one metres high and it's weight is normally 10-20kg.
The Dodo was discovered in 1598 by dutch sailors in Mauritius. The Bird became and still is the mascot of Mauritius.
The Dodo is an Omnivore, it eats all different kinds of food - fruit, nuts, seeds, roots and sometimes even different kinds of fish. Since the Dodo was flightless, they lived on the ground but didn't have any specific enemies on Mauritius.
The birds lived alone, they built nests where they laid their eggs. The dodos breed all year round, they don't have any specific breeding seasons.
The loss of the Dodo-birds almost caused the extinction of the tambalacoque tree, also called the Dodo- tree. The seeds from the Tambalacocque tree would only grow after passing through the Dodos digestive system. After the Dodos extinction, scientists found a way for it to grow after passing through turkeys digestive system.
175 years after the first discovered Dodo- bird, the very last Dodo died.
